For me, Atlas is the first camera bag to check all boxes.

Outdoor recreation like mountain biking, splitboarding and resort riding creates plenty of opportunity for abuse of delicate and expensive photo gear. I always struggled to find a pack that fit my big three criteria: comfort, packability and protection. There are plenty of packs that do one or two of those really well, but Atlas is the first to check all boxes for me. I’m able to confidently and comfortably ride bikes and boards, and have taken many a tumble on harsh terrain without damaging my gear.

Checkout my full review of the Athlete and what makes it such a great solution for camer gear.

I spend around 250-300 days each year on the road. From the scorching fine sand deserts of Namibia to arctic temperatures of Finnish Lapland to self-assigned projects at 6500m in -35ºC. My gear goes through a lot… and so do the bags that come along on the job. And I’ve never been able to find the perfect bag that can do it all

Atlas Packs is my go to camera bag for astrophotography.

I have tried many so called "outdoor or hiking camera packs." All of them failed for me in terms of fit and comfort until I found Atlas Packs. I am a wider build and a bigger man. This pack fits my shoulders perfectly and if I am carrying heavy weight, the belt is comfortable and functional.

Atlas was the best choice for me. I looked at all the camera bags

I started using because I was planning another trip to the remote forest of the Republic of the Congo. I needed a backpack that would be spacious enough to accomodate my photographic gear but also camping equipment and other items necessary during expedition. More importantly, I needed that the backpack would be comfortable to wear during long, difficult walks in the rainforest. After testing it in some mountainous hikes, International travelling and climbing Gran Paradiso mountain I decided to take it to Congo. It was the best decision I've made.

Hi, I'm Wilson. I am a Portuguese scientist, photographer and member of The Explorers Club, based in Germany. My background in biology and anthropology had led me to some of the remotest rainforests on Earth on several expeditions. Nowadays I work mainly with nomadic communities in the Republic of the Congo, documenting their lives. When I'm not hiking through dense rainforest, you can find me hiking, climbing and mountaneering around the world, exploring other cultures, nature and the human potential. The Atlas Athlete pack has been revolutionary for my style of travelling and for my expeditions allowing me to carry all my photographic equipment comfortably, while also carrying food supplies and sleeping equipment.

From sea to summit, Atlas Pack is the best for camera gear

Atlas Packs Athlete backpack: My Athlete pack goes everywhere I go. Being a hybrid shooter working in multiple environments on a single shoot means I’m almost always carrying a ton of gear, and the way this pack distributes weight makes it feel like I’m barely carrying anything. Plus, it keeps my gear safe, whether it’s traversing deserts, a zombie apocalypse, or running through airports to catch the next flight.

I lead hiking expeditions to some of the most remote and rugged mountain ranges on earth and it's...

For years, I actually worked as a gear tester for a major travel blog. I literally tested dozens of packs during my tenure. The landscape for hybrid photo x hiking backpacks is actually quite narrow and it was not before I tried the Atlas Athlete Pack did I truly feel like I had found the right pack for myself. I lead trips all over the world in a wide variety of climates, terrains, and landscapes - all of which involve trekking or climbing of some kind. If I did not have my Atlas Pack, I truly do not know how I could operate in the field the way I do. My Athlete Pack delivers the right balance of wearable comfort and support, has enough space for me to have gear for high altitude and long day hikes in cold weather, and gives me plenty of flexibility for my camera and drone set up. In short, I can’t recommend this pack enough if you like wild, rugged adventures and need to carry multiple camera lenses and/or a drone. There is simply nothing better on the market that feels like a proper hiking bag, but delivers as the essentials of a top tier camera bag. Full stop.

What's in my pack

For reference here is my current setup that I tend to have on me most of the time:
– Fujifilm X-T3 Mirrorless Camera
– Fujifilm 10-24 F 4.0
– Fujifilm 23 Prime F 1.4.
– Fujifilm 18 - 55 F 2.0
– Fujifilm 55 - 200 F 2.0
– Fujifilm 100-400 F 4.0
- DJI Air2s
- Dji Mini 3 Pro
- Insta360 X2

Hey guys! Chris here. I have been leading hiking expeditions to some of the most remote and rugged mountain ranges on earth for the past 7 years. Photography plays a huge roll in what I do as through my photos and videos, I help to breakdown negative stereotypes about parts of the world often considered dangerous or that might otherwise prevent people from traveling to these truly magical destinations. Basically I sling life-changing experiences for a living and hope to inspire the travel community at large to push their limits of comfort and laugh as much as possible along the way.

From Himalayan summits to the lush ridges of Madeira Island, my Atlas Pack is with me every step of the way, and has proved to be a crucial and adaptable pack for all of the diverse adventures I embark on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Athlete Pack designed for?

The Athlete Pack is a versatile, compact camera bag designed for photographers who need a lighter, more adaptable solution for day trips or shorter adventures. Its expandable storage and Origami Camera Core give quick access to gear without sacrificing comfort or functionality.

What are the dimensions and weight of the Gen2 Athlete Pack?

The Gen2 Athlete measures 21 inches (53cm) tall in Medium or 23 inches (58cm) in Large, 11 inches (28cm) wide, and 7 inches (18cm) deep. Without the frame, height drops to 18 inches (46cm) in Medium or 20 inches (51cm) in Large. Weight is 4.4 lbs (2.0 kg) for Medium and 4.5 lbs (2.0 kg) for Large. Measurements are a guide, expect some variance given the pack's flexible, adjustable design.

What are the capacity modes of the Gen2 Athlete Pack?

The Gen2 Athlete expands across three setups: Everyday Setup at 20 liters for daily use, Daypack Setup at 30 liters, and Multiday Setup at 40 liters, with an expandable front shell covering the full 20 to 40 liter range.

What are the Gen2 camera core's interior dimensions?

The Gen2 Origami Camera Core has a full interior length of 13.5 inches (34cm), an interior width of 9 inches (23cm), a depth of 4.5 inches (11cm) measured with a ruler, and roughly 5.5 inches (14cm) of usable depth for camera gear. The core folds down to about 7.75 inches (20cm) in length.

What fabric and colors does the Gen2 Athlete Pack come in?

Gen2 is made from NY210 fabric and is available in Black, Gray, and Yellow.

Yes, the Athlete has a dedicated laptop slot fitting up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.

What mountaineering and external carry features does the Athlete Pack have?

The Athlete includes dedicated ice-axe loops, sleeping bag loops, a 1.5L water bladder pocket, and a double row of front lash points with side pockets suited to tripods and other external gear. The hip belt is removable, so you can run it as a lighter daily carry pack and attach the belt only when you need the added weight distribution.

Can the frame be removed from the Athlete Pack, and are there sizing options?

Yes, the frame can be removed by hand with some effort, though reinstalling it typically requires a tool like a tire iron or crescent wrench, so pay attention to the frame's orientation when putting it back in. The Large size also accepts an optional Traveler's Frame, sold separately, which reduces pack height to around 20 inches (51cm) for stricter carry-on limits.

Has the Athlete Pack won any design awards?

Yes. The Atlas Athlete Pack won the Carryology Camera Bag of the Year award, and has been ranked among the top 10 camera backpacks on the planet since 2018.

What material gives the Athlete's Origami Camera Core its structure?

The Gen2 Athlete's single-fold Origami Camera Core pairs Velex infinite loop lining with 1/2 inch EVA foam. That combination is what gives the core its rigid, box-like protection, so you get full camera protection built into the pack itself without needing a separate case, cube, or ICU.

" I have used the full gamut of packs and bags for almost every activity and have come to love and rely upon Atlas Packs. It comes down to two essential principles: utility and ergonomics. ATHLETE PACK | EXPANSION IN LITERS

The Athlete Pack has a single-fold Origami Camera Core (TM) that shifts about 3 liters of space between the front and back of the pack. When compressed down, the Athlete Pack is about 20 liters and the camping / camera sections are basically split 50/50. In terms of hiking, think of the Athlete Pack like a day pack that can be expanded out. When you head out you have on more layers so you pack is not as full. As you walk you get warmer and start to shed layers and need to work out of your pack. At 20 liters there is plenty of space for lunch, a few layers, tech pouch and even a laptop plus more.

One of the key differences between the Athlete Pack and traditional camera bags is the shallow depth. Please expect your gear to fit tight and this is by design. When closed, the lid will hit the top of lenses and bodies that are taller than 5.5" / 14cm. This is normal. Slightly taller gear (up to 6"/15.5cm) also fits as long as you organize and pack well. Having a product that can change shape and size and comes sized no matter how big or tall you are is what makes Atlas Packs so special. There are a million ways to setup the Athlete Pack. The two pack on the left are setup at the smallest size of 20 liters and you can see how a the Origami fold shifts inside. This push or pull moves about 3 liters (that's enough space for a 70-200 plus a charger and cords and represents about 1/3 of the total camera pace).

CAMERA BODIES EXAMPLES

ASSORTED CAMERA BODIES: + Gripped Sony Alpha + Canon 5D + Canon R5 + Sony Alpha (non grip) + Fuji X100.....The increase in depth means that it's much easier to store gripped bodies in the Athlete Pack, but what about non-gripped bodies and smaller sets of gear. In this photo above, we have an assortment of camera bodies arranged without lenses. As you can see, the depth of the Athlete Pack is still really shallow and works great with the smaller systems and sets.**It's important to note the Nikon D850 with an RRS L-bracket attached will now fit in the Athlete Pack.

FITS 200-600 SIZE GLASS ATHLETE LONG DIVIDERS

The standard set of dividers now includes a new "mid-lense" size and there is an optional full-length divider. Great for big glass like the 200-600.

YKK ZIPPERS & PULLS

The Athlete Pack is now fully YKK. All of the buckles have been updated as well as small changes to zippers.

TOP LID MOLLE

In addition to the MOLLE loops on the hip belt, a set of loops has been added to the top lid.

So messen Sie:

Carryology verlieh ihm die Auszeichnung „Pack of the Year“.

The difference is in the design. Bags are designed to hang on shoulders. Backpacks are designed to hang on hips. This simple difference makes a huge difference and why Atlas Packs are so comfortable and easy to carry.

There are so many problems with camera bags it's hard to know where to start. First, they come in fixed liter increments, who packs the exact amount every time! Next, they are floppy and lack structure and need to be filled with smaller bags or inserts just to stand up. All this extra adds weight and drives up costs and limits access to camera gear. And finding a camera bag that properly fits, good luck. Camera bags are sized based on liters, not torso length or waist size. That's because camera bags are designed to hang on your shoulders while packs are designed to hang on your hips.

The Athlete Pack expands from 20 liters (compressed) to 40 liters (fully expanded). It’s like having three camera bags in one, making it versatile enough for everyday use, day trips, or extended adventures.

The Athlete Pack features the patented Origami Camera Core™, which allows you to adjust space for camera gear and non-camera gear with ease. It also offers superior weight distribution and comfort, with a custom-fitted hiking-grade hip belt, making it ideal for long hikes and strenuous trips.
