Atlas ATHLETE - 20-40L
Daypack to Overnight | High-Output Performance
I built the Athlete for the photographer who doesn't just 'go' on shoots—they hike, they ski, they climb. It’s a system that adapts as your day gets harder. Using our patented Shallow Origami Camera Core™, we keep your gear center-of-gravity as close to your spine as possible. It is slim, fast, and engineered to transition from an under-seat carry-on to a 40L overnight mission pack.
One Bag. Three Modes.
20L | Daypack Mode: Compressed and discreet. Fits under most airline seats.
30L | Hybrid Mode: The sweet spot for a full kit plus layers and a 16" laptop.
40L | Overnight Mode: Expanded for multi-day treks, ski gear, or camping essentials.
Built for the Field
Constructed with NY210 Rip Stop with x2 DWR coating and weather-sealed YKK® zippers for ultimate protection.
Mountaineering Ready
Features dedicated Ice-Axe loops, Sleeping Bag loops, and a 1.5L Water Bladder pocket.
External Carry
A double row of front lash points and specialized side pockets allow for secure carry of large tripods.
Optimized Access
Large "brain" top pocket and heavy-duty grab handle for fast organization and mobility.
Generally speaking the changes/updates are relatively minor -- this is why this it's a GEN2'a' and not a GEN3. That said, there are a number of important changes, let’s jump in...
FABRICS / COLORWAYS: CHALLENGE SAILCLOTH ULTRAGRID BLACKOUT: The new GEN2a Athlete is only available in Challenge Sailcloth Blackout. The colorway is black with light gold double rip stop threads for a sporty look with some depth.
Challenge Ultragrid is arguably one of the top ripstop on the market. The fabric is highly weatherproof, incredibly strong, rated C0 (PFAS and forever chemical free), recycled (20 water bottles per yard) and super light.
LIGHTER WEIGHT: Lighter by 1/2lb / .27kg
ORIGAMI CAMERA CORE: The inside camera carry is 1/2” deeper and 1/2” longer. This benefits big glass like the Sony 200-600 and allows for the body to the mounted on the lens.
SOFTER SIDEWALL SPONGE: The sidewall sponge that surrounds the Origami Camera Core has been updated to a softer density (from 46 to 30). This results in the same protection with a softer ride. This same sponge fits the sidewalls for the GEN1 and GEN2 Athlete Packs, will be available as an accessory and can be swapped out.
EXTERIOR UPDATES. The side pockets having increased in height significantly, this adds more of streamlined profile and makes for better storing of tripods and water bottles. The depth of the water bladder pocket now support larger bladders and has been moved to the other side. Routing for the tube now runs through a slot under the main brain (as per the design on the Adventure). The tube use to route through a slot between the shoulders in the yoke. The base of the pack has been reengineered to bring the bottom seam up higher and to minimize the number of cuts. This helps with waterproofing and squares the pack up a bit better so the eyelets are the better aligned. The "Athlete" logo has been removed from the main brain. A velcro loop patch has been added to the center of the ripstop shell (it's hidden under the main brain) for most pack-outs. Will be visible when packed to 35L plus.
ESTIMATED DELIVERY: Dec 2026 SHIPPING COSTS: Will be invoiced later in the year once the schedule is confirmed.

GET FITTED | MEDIUM OR LARGE TORSO
Atlas Packs are sized based on torso length. Choose the size that best fits your height/weight. Do not select a size based on liters. See the size chart here with additional details below.
1. Cut a piece of string 18"/45.5cm 2. Hold the top to your C7 vertebrae and drop the bottom end. 3. Now feel all the way down to where string ends. It will fall either above or below your Iliac Center (essentially your love handles and where you rest your hands when you are putting your hands on your hips).
----- PS: If the string goes past your love handles, that means your torso is shorter than 18" = medium size pack. If the string ends before your love handles, that means your torso longer than 18" = large size pack.

Flexible hiking pack for photographers
I’ve used the Atlas Athlete for several years and love it. I bought this pack because of its versatility to carry and protect camera equipment but also extra clothing, food etc that are more difficult to carry and access with other packs. This pack is also very comfortable to hike with because it’s a true hiking backpack. I recently added the QD clips to carry an extra camera from my waist belt and this has worked well. This saves my neck and is very secure. When using the origami feature I can pack a camera with lens attached inside the pack where I pack extra clothing (I’m trying to depict this in the 1st photo). I’m planning on also buying an adventure pack soon but I can carry an Olympus 150-400 attached to a camera with this pack.
This is not just the best camera pack I’ve ever had, it’s an amazing pack, period. Well-made, super comfortable to wear. Well thought out all atound. I will definitely be buying more from AtlasPacks.
I’m on my second Atlas pack now having owned the Athlete since 2019 and now a newer Adventure, and both times that I’ve dealt with Allan and the team have been phenomenal with personalised service helping me getting the exact bag I need. I’ve really appreciated the help each time and the extra mile they’ve gone. The bags themselves have been phenomenal as well with great features and superb build quality. Can’t fault Atlas Packs and will be a life long buyer and user of their bags and accessories.
Best camera Pack I have ever owned after decades of trying different brands, mostly Lowepro. Comfortable, sturdy, excellent zipper, good protection. I would like it if the chest strap was wider and the strap buckles were bigger.
There are many camera packs, but most do not have adequate suspension systems for a full camera kit and also tend to lack the capacity for non-camera essentials (layers for cold nights, food, rain gear, etc.).
Atlas has put a real backpack suspension system onto a bag that is highly flexible and tremendously versatile. I particularly like the origami fold system in my Adventure pack. It allows me to adjust the volume distribution between the rear camera section and the top compartment to fit my needs. I keep my long lens at the top of the camera compartment; if I don’t need to carry the long lens I can fold down the first fold of the origami and increase the volume of the top compartment.
I take my Adventure Backpack with me on every shoot, and it provides the perfect balance to fit all my camera and personal gear.
I've tried all the other camera backpacks but this one was instantly my favorite, and with the extra accessories, I've been able to tailor my backpack to all my travel needs.
Simply incredible product, quality and company. Allan was great to work with. I only bought a hip belt (for my existing back pack). In terms of the quality.... lets put it this way, my next backpack will definitely be an Atlas.
On a trip I was on a boat and needed access to a handheld wide angled camera and a 200-800 zoom on a second camera. The 200-800 is too heavy for a double strap over several hours. My solution was a gun belt from Kore belts and an Atlas Click QD Camera Clip. I was able to attach the Click clip to my belt and using a ProMediaGear plate on the lens foot was able to hang the camera off my waist. Worked great, I was able to freely move about with the heavy camera fully supported by my waist for 6 hours. Attaching and detaching the Click on my hip worked easily as I moved from wide angle to zoom. Very happy with the Click.
I purchased an Atlas Pack as a gift. The quality is impeccable and it arrived earlier than expected. The customer service was amazing and responded to my questions quickly. I’ll definitely be an Atlas Pack customer for life!
Great bag. The bag survived a challenging trip up Mt Kenya. Conditions were bad and ranged from tropical to glacial. The bag held three lenses, two camera bodies, and heavy day gear including crampons. The bag stayed dry inside without the rain cover in medium to heavy rain and snow. Good as an international carryon too. Adequate camera access for safari and walking safaris too. Sturdy camera area with room for more gear.
Look in my garage and you'll see dozens of packs (camera specific, hiking, canyoneering, backpacking, climbing, the works). Over the last 15+ years I've had numerous camera bags and packs. None of them hold a candle to Atlas Packs. You want a pack that can handle whatever adventure you take it on? Look no further!
I've been through a lot of backpacks. I've owned peak design's every day, think tank's shape shifter, goruck GR2, thule covert, brevite, ospreys... all of them have their positives and negatives, this pack has amazingly taken many of the good qualities from all of these bags and wrapped them into one. I needed a bag that could hold all my camera gear for video shoots, but I also wanted something that I could travel with and throw in some clothes. I cannot believe how much I can cram into this bag without it feeling like it's huge and keeping everything neat and compartmentalized. I love the tripod holders on the side (many of the bags i've owned have really annoying tripod holding mechanisms, or none at all)
Positives:
- Size is perfect, doesn't feel too big but can still hold a lot
- love the origami folder for when I want to carry my drone or a bigger lens
- Material quality is top notch
- Incredible amount of storage thanks to stretchy material on the front, can hold anything. I put my DJI ronin-s in the front section and it's well protected.
- Tripod / drink holsters are the best I've used
- Camera dividers are the best I've used, shape really nicely around your stuff and keeps it well protected
- I personally love that this bag isn't too deep like some other camera bags, it means certain lenses won't go in upright but most lenses for my Sony cameras fit fine.
- Love the expanding pockets on the hip belt, great for keeping a lens handy.
- Love that the hip belt is removable
- Love having the access panel on the back of the bag, I hate side entry bags - they seem like a good idea in theory but it just makes your gear really hard to access unless you're just carrying one camera with the lens attached.
- I like the minimal design overall
- Love the company and I like supporting smaller companies with a good ethos
- Price is high, but I think it's fair for a smaller company, and still a lot cheaper a Goruck but fits my needs better.
Criticisms:
- Don't like the yellow color version at all, the black looks good overall but could probably be classed up a little bit more since it's such a premium bag.
- Better shoulder straps with a little more padding/comfort and maybe some kind of phone holster built in - Think Tank are the kings of straps in my opinion. Shimoda has a cool phone holster.
- The laptop sleeve works great, but when the bag is fully loaded it's kind of a pain in the butt to get it out so when traveling and pulling it out for TSA this could be slightly irritating. If there was some way to have a dedicated zipper to get quick access to your laptop I think that'd be awesome.
- I wouldn't mind having a few more little organizational pockets and slots for things like pens, remotes, cables etc. The pockets are good but some of them can get messy/cluttered.

Amazing Pack
I picked up this pack so I would be able to bridge my camera gear load and clothing for trips and it has blown it out the water. I carry a Sony FX3 a few lenses gimbal and drone and I still have room, the origami expansion is great because I can pack depending on the trip whether I want to go for a lighter or heavier load. I also got the mesh that can be attached to the back and its great as well for looping things that you need on the fly. Cant recommend this pack enough.

Phenomenal. Does it all. Places for everything, surprising storage. Comfort, modularity in the shape of less discreet hiking pack. Excellent construction...

" I have used the full gamut of packs and bags for almost every activity and have come to love and rely upon Atlas Packs. It comes down to two essential principles: utility and ergonomics. I have a pack for nearly every occasion whether that is business travel, mountaineering, kayaking, trekking, every-day carry, or going to the beach. A pack is useless if it causes you back pain or hurts your body over time. Atlas packs are battle-tested, comfortable to wear, and carry and protect my gear in a variety of situations. I have modified my packs to fit my needs and years of heavy wear later, they are still going strong. " Evan Will @sharkostudios

" Being a full time adventure elopement photographer means flights, hiking, backpacking, camping and LOTS of camera gear. Until Atlas, there wasn't a great solution for my needs. I spent hours cutting apart standard backpacking packs and fitting camera cubes into them but they were never quite right. Atlas changed all of that! I use my Atlas Packs (of course I have both Athlete and Adventure) on every single one of my adventures and have completely stopped using any other pack. The design, quality, craftsmanship....second to none and they've never let me down, even in the worst of conditions " Jaysn Valentine

SPECIFICATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS
ATHLETE PACK | EXPANSION IN LITERS
The Athlete Pack has a single-fold Origami Camera Core (TM) that shifts about 3 liters of space between the front and back of the pack. When compressed down, the Athlete Pack is about 20 liters and the camping / camera sections are basically split 50/50. In terms of hiking, think of the Athlete Pack like a day pack that can be expanded out. When you head out you have on more layers so you pack is not as full. As you walk you get warmer and start to shed layers and need to work out of your pack. At 20 liters there is plenty of space for lunch, a few layers, tech pouch and even a laptop plus more.
INTERIOR DIMENSIONS: Origami Camera Core
ORIGAMI CAMERA CORE (TM)DEPTH: 5-6" | Shallow DepthORIGAMI FOLDS: Single FoldLITERS FOR CAMERA: | 7, 10-----The Athlete Pack has a single fold Origami Camera Core (TM) and can be adjusted between 7 & 10 liters. One of the key differences between the Athlete Pack and traditional camera bags is the shallow depth. Please expect your gear to fit tight and this is by design. When closed, the lid will hit the top of lenses and bodies that are taller than 5.5" / 14cm. This is normal. Slightly taller gear (up to 6"/15.5cm) also fits as long as you organize and pack well. More details as well as photos are available via the link below.
SIMPLE PUSH AND PULLNO ICU OR CAMERA CUBESHOW IT WORKS
Having a product that can change shape and size and comes sized no matter how big or tall you are is what makes Atlas Packs so special. There are a million ways to setup the Athlete Pack. The two pack on the left are setup at the smallest size of 20 liters and you can see how a the Origami fold shifts inside. This push or pull moves about 3 liters (that's enough space for a 70-200 plus a charger and cords and represents about 1/3 of the total camera pace).
CAMERA BODIES EXAMPLES
ASSORTED CAMERA BODIES: + Gripped Sony Alpha + Canon 5D + Canon R5 + Sony Alpha (non grip) + Fuji X100.....The increase in depth means that it's much easier to store gripped bodies in the Athlete Pack, but what about non-gripped bodies and smaller sets of gear. In this photo above, we have an assortment of camera bodies arranged without lenses. As you can see, the depth of the Athlete Pack is still really shallow and works great with the smaller systems and sets.**It's important to note the Nikon D850 with an RRS L-bracket attached will now fit in the Athlete Pack.
FITS 200-600 SIZE GLASSATHLETE LONG DIVIDERS
The standard set of dividers now includes a new "mid-lense" size and there is an optional full-length divider. Great for big glass like the 200-600.
YKK ZIPPERS & PULLS
The Athlete Pack is now fully YKK. All of the buckles have been updated as well as small changes to zippers.
TOP LID MOLLE
In addition to the MOLLE loops on the hip belt, a set of loops has been added to the top lid.

Frequently Asked Questions
Atlas Athlete Camera Pack | Fits glass as big as 200-600 FAQs
Is there really a difference between packs and bags?
The difference is in the design. Bags are designed to hang on shoulders. Backpacks are designed to hang on hips. This simple difference makes a huge difference and why Atlas Packs are so comfortable and easy to carry.
There are so many problems with camera bags it's hard to know where to start. First, they come in fixed liter increments, who packs the exact amount every time! Next, they are floppy and lack structure and need to be filled with smaller bags or inserts just to stand up. All this extra adds weight and drives up costs and limits access to camera gear. And finding a camera bag that properly fits, good luck. Camera bags are sized based on liters, not torso length or waist size. That's because camera bags are designed to hang on your shoulders while packs are designed to hang on your hips.
What is the capacity of the Atlas Athlete Pack?
The Athlete Pack expands from 20 liters (compressed) to 40 liters (fully expanded). It’s like having three camera bags in one, making it versatile enough for everyday use, day trips, or extended adventures.
