DEEP DIVE

ADVENTURE PACK DESIGN AND FEATURE

The Adventure Pack was the first pack we designed. It 2014 and we wanted to hit the ground with a pack designed exclusively for the Professional Photography and Video market. Now as we all know, there are plenty of camera bag companies making camera bags for this slice of the market. And as was true then, and is still true today, none of these companies make camera bags that properly load the weight of all that heavy gear to your hips and provide for proper workflow and access.

Let's get into the details...

ALL ABOUT HIP BELTS

BATTLE TESTED DESIGN AND REAL WORLD USAGE

Breakout the main benefits of the Adventure Pack

For the Adventure Pack we prioritized around the following concepts: Supporting large sets of gear, efficient workflow and organization, ease of use during travel and of course comfort and fit. Over the year the design of the pack has proven to be durable and dependable and a product you can trust and rely on.

What about organization and worklow. How many pockets and ways to store are there?

Accessing and organizing is super easy thanks to a backpanel that fully opens and a ton of pockets spread throughout the pack.

In real world how well does the Adventure Pack travel carry-on?

The Adventure Pack excels. Typically camera bags as big as the Adventure Pack have removable camera cubes or ICU's that
need to be taken out for overhead storage. The Adventure Pack is small enough at 35L to easily meet carry on sizes. Pack smart and it will always be with you...

How easy is the frame to remove in the Adventure Pack

Super easy to remove and reinstall. No tool is needed. Takes less than 10 seconds for either motion. Please note orientation of how the frame curves.

What were the main updates for GEN1 and GEN2 and is there an easy way to tell which pack is what gen?

Yes, check the buckles and this page, it has all the details >>

What about the logo, how much does it stand out?

The ATLAS logo on the front of the pack has been updated from the GEN1 Packs. The updated logo is both smaller and the colorway is tonal. You can expect the logo to fade out in the shadows and be somewhat visible in direct light.

ADVENTURE PACK VOLUME AND EXTERIOR SPECS

The Adventure Pack starts with a capacity of about 35 liters. It offers around 20 liters for camera gear and 15 liters for non-camera gear. As you expand the pack, the space for non-camera gear increases to approximately 35 liters, giving you a total capacity of 60 liters.

This chart illustrates showcases three examples of how much the Adventure Pack will expand up and out as the front is filled. The default size of the pack is about 35 liters. This is the smallest setup and how the pack arrives when you take it out of the box.

Adventure Pack Background and History

We designed the Adventure Pack because camera bags are all giant boxes!  We wanted a thinner, more nimble design that holds weight close to the body and doesn’t impede movement in busy urban areas or while moving over terrain.

We also wanted a way to move space inside the pack without have to remove and insert anything and why we designed and developed our Origami Camera Core (TM). Camera bags are floppy and lack structure and have to be filled with smaller bags to secure camera gear. These systems add costs and weight and use a "pressure fit" design. Pressure fitting resulting in a fundamental compromise to a bags load carry why camera bags carry so much heavier than they actually weigh.

With the Adventure Pack, we've designed the worlds first and only true hybrid - and taken the best from the world of camera and the outdoors and combined them together. Countless awards and accolades. Battle tested world wide since 2018 by thousands of pros and armatures alike.

What's the difference between a pack and a bag?

Camera bags don't distribute weight, it's why you will love the fit and feel of the Adventure Pack.

There are so many problems with camera bags it's hard to know where to start. First, they come in fixed liter increments, who packs the exact amount every time! Next, they are floppy and lack structure and need to be filled with smaller bags or inserts just to stand up. All this extra adds weight and drives up costs and limits access to camera gear. And finding a camera bag that properly fits, good luck. Camera bags are sized based on liters, not torso length or waist size. That's because camera bags are designed to hang on your shoulders while packs are designed to hang on your hips.

Get into details about the Origami Camera Core (TM)

Inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding, we invented and patented a new type of camera core. Unlike camera bag that need to be stuffed with ICU's or camera cubes, at Atlas Packs we design our packs with a sewn-in camera core. In the Athlete Pack, the top section of the camera core has movable fold that can easily be repositioned and in doing so, space shifts between the back and front sections of the pack.

The Origami Camera Core (TM) is a much better system when compared to camera bags that use ICU's because:

+ It's safer for camera gear
+ Distributes weight better
+ Holds more gear per/liter
+ Allows for both camera and amping gear
+ Can be resized on the fly

-----

With an Adventure Pack, your camera gear is snug and secure and easily accessible without having to cinch the pack down. Said another way, the non-camera section is fully independent from the camera side and can be expanded and compressed down as needed.

And unlike camera bags, there are no camera-cores or inserts that go inside. These systems are expensive and poorly designed. All of your heavy camera gear is detached from the structure of the bag and the zippers keep the inserts in place via a "pressure fit".

We invented and patented our own method and instead of pressure, we use "friction". Friction is a key ingredient to the way our Origami Camera Core (TM) functions. Be sure to test out just how much pop and snap your the pocket has. We made significant improvements to friction and structure with new types of foam, the shaping of the foam (also called "skiving") as well as all the outer fabrics that connect everything to the pack and frame.

What size laptops fit in the Adventure Pack>

Laptops up to 17" will easily fit. The Adventure Pack has a dedicated pocket for laptops. The pocket is located between the admin panel and front section and accessible without having to unzip the backpanel or unclip the front buckles.

Which size Adventure Pack should I get?

While torso fitting is best, it's easiest to start with height. This method works 86% of the time. Check the size chart for sizing and the next tab down if you want to measure.

What happens if I get the wrong size pack?

It's not going to fit well. With the Adventure Pack there are no benefits to the wrong size. Get the size based on your torso length. Pack size is different from liters / capacity . There is no difference between the medium and large in terms of size, capacity of footprint.

How do I measure my torso length?

1. Cut a piece of string 18"/45.5cm
2. Hold the top to your C7 vertebrae and drop the bottom end.
3. Now feel all the way down to where string ends. It will fall either
above or below your Iliac Center (essentially your love handles and
where you rest your hands when you are putting your hands on your hips).

-----
PS: If the string goes past your love handles, that means your torso is
shorter than 18" = medium size pack. If the string ends before your love handles, that means your torso longer than 18" = large size pack.

What if I'm between torso sizes?

With the Adventure Pack go shorter if your are of average weight and between sizes. If you have a medium torso and are broad chested consider getting the large. Please chat with Pro Support for info.

  • NO ICU OR CAMERA CUBES

The Origami Camera Core (TM) is incredibly strong and durable and because it's sewn in, is part of the structure of the pack.

  • SIMPLE PUSH AND PULL

The Origami Camera Core (TM) is clean, elegant and does not make any noise when you move it. There is nothing to take out or store. Activate with a simple push / pull.

  • INTERNAL + EXTERNAL EXPANSION

Having a sew-in shape-shifting Origami Camera Core (TM) includes one other major benefit! You can now split the pack and expand out for additional space. The Origami Camera Core (TM) is only found inside Atlas Packs and separates the Pack into a front section (accessible from the top) for camping gear, and a back section (rear entry zipper) for camera gear.

  • HOW IT WORKS

Having a product that can change shape and size and comes sized no matter how big or tall you are is what makes Atlas Packs so special. There are a million ways to setup an Atlas Pack and the fact that all your camera gear is fully accessible is one of the key benefits.

HOW THIS SETUP FITS CAMERA GEAR

Fully expanded (both folds down), the Origami Camera Core (TM) in the Adventure Pack is rated for big glass mounted on camera bodies. As an example a Sony 400mm 2.8 or a 200-600 in ready to shoot.

With the first fold down, the Origami Camera Core (TM) in the Adventure Pack is split 50/50. This setup is rated for lenses akin to a 70-200 2.8 with body attached and a 200-600 without the body.

With both folds down, the Origami Camera Core (TM) in the Adventure Pack is now setup with just 6 liters for camera gear. At this size you can fit up to x4 2.8 size lenses and a body.

ADVENTURE or ATHLETE PACK

As Sarah packed for her weekend camping trip, she carefully considered what types of photos she wanted to take. She of course wanted to bring all of her gear, but also wanted to pack light.
She laid out everything including her lenses on the bed, debating what ones to bring. Prime lenses are great but you have a pack a lot to cover ground. Lenses like a 24-105 are great for wide shots. A 70-200 can be also, but is typically best for tighter composition.

Much like the overlap in focal length between Sarah’s lens, Atlas Packs have an overlap too. The Athlete Pack goes from 20-40 liters while the Adventure Pack goes from 35-60 liters. In the photo below, you can see just how similar the packs are when setup at this size.

Which pack you select is very much going to depend on how and what you plan to shoot.

Let's compare the footprint as the Adventure to Athlete expand and compress down. As a reminder, the change here is specific to the front side of the pack where non-camera gear is stored. All the wrinkles you see in the pack on the left gone by the time the pack is fully loaded.

**Of note, the height of the large Athlete is the same as the Adventure at 23"/58.5cm. The height of the medium Athlete is 2"/5cm shorter.

CUSTOM FIT HIKING-GRADE HIP BELT

LET'S CHOOSE YOUR BELT

The hip belt is the most important part of camera backpacking! Without the right size hip belt (one with padding that properly wraps around the front of your hip bones), you will not be able to properly load the weight of your heavy camera gear. Atlas Packs offers three different style hip belts in four sizes ranges. Pick the hip belt that works best for your needs. The hip belt is designed to transfer around 90% of your backpack’s weight from your shoulders to your hips.

All Atlas Packs hip belt's are interchangeable and can be used with all packs. And because the hip belt is removable, it's easy to make your pack smaller when you need; perfect for daily use and light loads.

HIP BELT SIZE CHART

Finding the right size is easy. Checkout the fitting chart and follow the steps. The most important measurement is to make sure the padding is long enough to cover your hips. If the padding falls short, then the weight of the pack will not properly transfer away from your shoulders and load on to your hips.

  • The Adventure Hip Belt

The Adventure Hip Belt is designed for heavier loads and includes a thick dual-layer of foam with a mesh outer span designed to grip and hold tight while providing for the utmost in comfort. This belt is best if you are super skinny without much in the way of layers OR if you have lots of love around your handles. The contour and shape of the belt means you can rest a lot of weight without having to squeeze super tight. If you're looking for a hip belt that can handle heavier loads, the Adventure Hip Belt is perfect for you. It features a thick dual-layer of foam with a mesh outer span designed to grip and hold tight, ensuring maximum comfort.

  • The Athlete Hip Belt

The Athlete Hip Belt is designed for lighter loads and includes a thick single-layer of foam with a soft outer span that makes for a more streamlined and minimalist look with incredible fit and comfort. The Athlete style hip belt is recommended for packs with lighter loads (under 25lbs). The design of the webbing on the Athlete belt angles up as it goes around your mid section and works well with layers like jeans, shorts and a belt for all day comfort.

  • The Traveler's Hip Belt

The Travel Hip Belt (also known as the Haenisch Hip Belt) has no padding, just a soft wrap with 38mm buckle and webbing. The Travel Hip Belt is available as an add on item and is not included with a pack. Available in gray (as shown) and black. Sizes S/M, M/L, XL with same
    measurements as Athlete belts.

ALL ABOUT HIP BELTS

HIP BELT FAQ

How much are the hip belts?

A hip belt of your choice is included with the purchase of your pack. Choose either the Adventure or Athlete style. The names of the belts are the same as the packs but all belts can be used with all packs.

**please note, the cost of the hip belt will be zero'd out in your cart.

Which hip belt is best for me?

The Adventure Belt is my personal favorite, as it offers both functionality and durability. It's designed to handle heavy loads without compromising comfort.

With that said, I get the most use out of my the Traveler's belt, I rarely take it off my pack. It's great for daily use, quick trips and of course travel.

How do I know which size to get?

See the size chart below. To measure, start with your pants size. This technique is the simplest and effective 90% of the time.

If the measurement (in inches or cm) of your pants fall between sizes, opt for the larger size belt!

Can I measure with a tape measure?

Yes. To measure with a tape measure you need to calculate the the span between your hips.

Place the tape measure on the front of one hip bone and work the tape around your back until you get to the other hip. For the final calculation add two fingers to each side for the total >> Measure up!

The width of the padding should cover the distance between your hips plus 1.5in/4cm on both sides.

What if I'm between sizes on hip belts?

Size up!!!

What about big and tall sizes?

We got ya and don't be shy if what we offer still not in your range. We
love help and will make a custom extender for you at no additional cost.

Can I use the pack without the hip belt?

Yes and it's one of my favorite features of the pack. Been able to easily remove the hip belt for use around town or to save space / bulk is exactly what they are also designed to do.

Can the hip belt without the pack?

Yes but ONLY WITH THE MAG BUCKLE >>

If you want to use your hip belt separately from your pack to carry camera gear around your hips, via the MOLLE webbing and third party attachments, a Magnetic Fidlock Buckle is MANDATORY.

The standard YKK buckle can be released via in-direct pressure and without the support of the pack, the hip belt would fall.

Available in black and gray and in two sizes, the large 38mm size fits all current hip belt styles (Athlete, Adventure and Travelers). The 25mm style fit an older style Athlete hip belt.

If you want to use the belt without the pack, the magnetic buckle is REQUIRED. Without the standard buckle the belt will release and fall to the ground (since it's not on the pack). Select the buckle size based on the width of your webbing (most best are 38mm).

How do I connect the hip belt to the pack?

This step is important. Hip belts are connected to the small pouches on the side of your pack. The 15mm webbing (the small skinny piece), needs to thread into the small buckle as shown in this image here. Be sure to pull tight and create a lot of tension.

How to install the hip belt on an Atlas Pack

Can I order more than 1 hip belt?

At this time you cannot purchase a second Athlete or Adventure style belt with your pack. Supply is limited, and the there is not enough of a difference between the two styles to justify the additional cost. My advice, get a Traveler's belt on the side, this will be a much better ROI.

**if you need a new Adventure or Athlete belt and are not purchasing a pack, please know stock and colorway is limited. Please contact Pro Support with any questions.
