DEEP DIVE | When we first released the Athlete Pack, production was very small, limited to just 300 units and they were not sold to the public or available online.

ATHLETE PACK DESIGN AND FEATURE

We wanted a camera bag that wouldn't impede movement in busy urban areas or while moving over terrain. The design challenge is that camera gear is very dense and heavy and needs to be properly supported or the bag will swing around too much.

ATLAS ATHLETE PACK - SHALLOW DESIGN

THE GIMBAL OF CAMERA BAGS

Why an "Athlete Pack" >> We wanted a camera bag that wouldn't impede movement in busy urban areas or while moving over terrain. The design challenge is that camera gear is very dense and heavy and needs to be properly supported or the bag will swing around too much.

The Athlete Pack is a true hybrid - just as much a hiking pack as a camera bag with just the right ratio of storage space for both camera and non-camera gear.

When Atlas first launched we asked Caleb Kerr to make us a video to help explain just how versatile the pack is. Still relevant after all these years. Click here for the og on yt

GRAB BAG TOP HANDLE

Thick and heavy duty grab bag top handle is a pleasure to use. Designed to stand-up well and be ready when you need to grab your pack. Rubber cover can be heated and repaired should it get any scratches or gouges.

TOP LID MOLLE

In addition to the MOLLE loops on the hip belt, a set of loops has been added to the top lid.

OVERBUILT ADJUSTABLE SHOULDER HARNESS

The Athlete Pack includes a sewn-in shoulder harness with a torso length based on frame height. The straps are well cushioned and very comfortable. They break in quickly and feel great on bare skin.

SIDE ACCESS

Side-Access to the front side of the Athlete Pack. At this position you are right above the top of the Origami fold. This side zipper (YKK Aqua Guard with sealed seams) has been added on the right side of the pack. The main benefit of this zipper means you don't have to open the front lid to get to the front of your pack. Super helpful.

SMALLER | TONAL ATLAS LOGO

The ATLAS logo on the front of the pack is significantly smaller and the colorway is tonal. You can expect the logo to fade out in the shadows and be somewhat visible in direct light with a bit of sheen.

SIDE POCKET DUMP POUCHES

Tucked away in the side pouches that connect the belt to the pack are a set of dump pouches. Hidden away in the side pouches (the flaps that help connect the belt to the pack) are a set of secret dump pouches. Great for lenses, water bottles, cell phones, snacks, etc... For the GEN2 packs the much requested elastic draw-string has been added.

TRIPOD / WATER SIDE POCKETS

The side pockets of the Athlete Pack (used for water bottles and tripods) have undergone a significant change. The bottom 1/3 of the pocket has a split layer that reinforces and protects against wear and tear from both inside and outside the pocket. It's important to note that there is a slight loss in flexibility due to the change in design, however users can expect the usage to be much improved.

LOOPS, LASH AND HOOK ON

A full set of lash loops running down the front of the pack along with a set of loops for connecting ice axes, skis, snow shoes, runs down the front of the pack. On the Adventure Pack this feature is new to the GEN2 packs. The underside of the pack include loops for sleeping bags.

Athlete Pack History

Looking to nerd out a bit about the history and background. Here are the details about the Atlas Athlete Pack. The first copies are early prototypes, this Athlete Pack has an ORIGAMI CAMERA CORE (TM) rated for Leica, micro 4/3 and mirrorless systems circa 2015-2017. Production was very small, limited to just 300 units and they were not sold to the public or available online. You had to find us at a camera trade show or festival and be personally fitted to purchase one of these early editions. Fast forward to 2017 and the launch of atlaspacks.com.

This is when we started to sell an Athlete Pack with an updated ORIGAMI CAMERA CORE (TM). This generation Athlete Packs is rated for non-gripped DSLR's and mirrorless bodies, L-size and GM glass placed flat as well as systems like micro 4/3 and Leica.

Over a 5+ year period we made numerous small incremental updates and improvements based on customer feedback with one exception. When asked to increase the depth we always pushed back... Why?

The short answer is... There was not enough of the right types of camera gear out in the market to justify the change in design. Keep in mind most consumer are not upgrading to the latest and greatest no matter what message boards say. It takes a while for everyone to catch-up and that time happening now.

Camera gear is the heaviest, expensive and most fragile item you will carry on your back and the key to the success of the Athlete Pack is how well it keeps all that precious weight close to your body. National Geographic said the Athlete Pack is "one of the best camera bags for travelers", Ski Magazine said, "best camera bag for skiers" and Outside Magazine said, "best photography gear for 2020" amongst many other awards and accolades ;). With the release of this new generation, the Athlete will continue to be the pack that leads the way.

Working with our partners at Sony and Canon we are granted access to camera and video gear before the public. We test and spec'd every imaginable combination and with purpose and precision have designed the new generation of Athlete Packs for your next generation of camera and camping gear.

Details on all of the updates and features are below. Of note: Smaller gear sets like APS-sensors, Leica and Micro 4/3 size kits all still fit great; it's just that the new bodies and grips, tall GM and RF wides and long telephotos now fit too :)

Get into details about the Origami Camera Core (TM)

Inspired by the Japanese art of paper folding, we invented and patented a new type of camera core. Unlike camera bag that need to be stuffed with ICU's or camera cubes, at Atlas Packs we design our packs with a sewn-in camera core. In the Athlete Pack, the top section of the camera core has movable fold that can easily be positioned and in doing so, space shifts between the back and front sections of the pack.

The Origami Camera Core (TM) is a much better system when compared to camera bags and ICU systems:

+ It's safer for camera gear
+ Distributes weight better
+ Holds more gear per/liter
+ Allows for non-camera gear
+ Can be resized on the fly

-----

With an Athlete Pack, your camera gear is snug and secure and easily accessible without having to cinch the pack down. Said another way, the non-camera section is fully independent from the camera side and can be expanded and compressed down as needed.

And unlike camera bags, there are no camera-cores or inserts that go inside. These systems are expensive and poorly designed. All of your heavy camera gear is detached from the structure of the bag and the zippers keep the inserts in place via a "pressure fit".

We invented and patented our own method and instead of pressure, we use "friction". Friction is a key ingredient to the way our Origami Camera Core (TM) functions. Be sure to test out just how much pop and snap your the pocket has. We made significant improvements to friction and structure with new types of foam, the shaping of the foam (also called "skiving") as well as all the outer fabrics that connect everything to the pack and frame.

What size laptops fit in the Athlete Pack>

Laptops as big as a 16" MacBook fit. The Athlete Pack has a dedicated sleeve for laptops. The sleeve is located on the back side of the Origami Camera Core, inside the front of the pack.

Which size pack should I get?

Choose your pack based on your torso length but start first with your height. While torso fitting is best, height works 86% of the time. Check the size chart for sizing and the next tab down if you want to measure.

Can I get the medium if I have a long torso?

The benefits to getting the medium are very limited. It's best to get the pack that fits correctly and adapt for specific use cases.

With the large Athlete Pack you can remove the standard frame and install a smaller "Traveler's Frame". This frame is not included and sold as an extra part. The large Athlete has a second set of flaps tacked in about 2"/5cm lower on the inner panel. Installing the Traveler's Frame here bring the pack height down to about 20" / 50.8cm --> Perfect for carry-on.

Installing this frame requires a tool such as a tire iron or crescent wrench.

How do I measure my torso length?

1. Cut a piece of string 18"/45.5cm
2. Hold the top to your C7 vertebrae and drop the bottom end.
3. Now feel all the way down to where string ends. It will fall either
above or below your Iliac Center (essentially your love handles and
where you rest your hands when you are putting your hands on your hips).

-----
PS: If the string goes past your love handles, that means your torso is
shorter than 18" = medium size pack. If the string ends before your love handles, that means your torso longer than 18" = large size pack.

What about shoulder straps shaped specifically for women?

Curved shoulder harness systems for women are recommend when hip belts are not adequate to support the load. When you have a properly sized pack and hip belt a straight shoulder harness works perfectly.

What if I'm between sizes?

With the Athlete Pack I recommend the medium if you are between sizes and are slim/slender or if you have a well sized hips. If you are broad chested and/or have big shoulders and between sizes, consider getting the large. Please chat with Pro Support for info.

ALL ABOUT HIP BELTS

BATTLE TESTED DESIGN AND REAL WORLD USAGE

What about organization and worklow. How many pockets and ways to store are there?

Pockets are limited on the Athlete. All the pockets are in the main brain. There Athlete has a very traditional hiking pack design with the stuff sack expandable front.
The Origami Insert is designed to organize the front side of the Athlete.

In real world how well does the Athlete Pack travel carry-on?

It's like having a golden ticket to board whenever you want without fear that you will have to be separated from your gear. Enjoy that last few sips of beer before you board and breeze down the aisles to your seat. Of note, I highly, highly, highly recommend getting the Traveler's Hip Belt...

How easy is the frame to remove in the Athlete Pack

It's somewhat easy to remove by hand. It's not easy to replace by hand. You will need a tool like a tire iron or crescent wrench to reinstall an Athlete frame. Please note orientation of how the frame curves.

What differences are there between the medium and large Athlete Packs?

There are a number of differences.

  1. No pass-through zipper on the medium between the front and back of the pack (keep in mind you can go through the side)
  2. Two small pockets on the inner backpanel on the large.
  3. One big pocket on the inner backpanel on the medium
  4. Different size raincovers
  5. Different size frame.
  6. The large has a second set of flaps that allows for the install of a smaller Traveler's Frame.

What were the main updates for GEN 1 and GEN 2 and is there an easy way to tell which pack is what gen?

The best way to tell is by looking at the buckles. If the pack has this buckle it's GEN 2.

See all the details on this page >>

Do you recommend buying a used Athlete Pack?

Yes and welcome to the family. Be sure to check the torso length - there is a small tag tucked into the lumbar padding for the right side pocket.

**If it's a GEN1 pack and you have APS-C sized gear, it's going to be great. I highly recommend getting a new hip belt and checking to make sure the divider are still good. At some point I would recommend getting a fresh set of dividers as the foam breaks down over time.

***Please note the GEN1 packs are not rated for larger size gear

The Origami Camera Core (TM) is incredibly strong and durable and because it's sewn in, is part of the structure of the pack.

  • INTERNAL + EXTERNAL EXPANSION

Having a sew-in shape-shifting Origami Camera Core (TM) includes one other major benefit! You can now split the pack and expand out for additional space. The Origami Camera Core (TM) is only found inside Atlas Packs and separates the Pack into a front section (accessible from the top) for camping gear, and a back section (rear entry zipper) for camera gear.

  • HOW IT WORKS

Having a product that can change shape and size and comes sized no matter how big or tall you are is what makes Atlas Packs so special. There are a million ways to setup the Athlete Pack. The two pack on the left are setup at the smallest size of 20 liters and you can see how a the Origami fold shifts inside. This push or pull moves about 3 liters (that's enough space for a 70-200 plus a charger and cords and represents about 1/3 of the total camera pace).

The Athlete Pack was awarded "Best Camera Bag for Travelers" by National Geographic.

ATHLETE PACK VOLUME AND EXTERIOR SPECS

What makes the Athlete Pack so unique? It's all the wrinkles you see in the photos. It's because this one pack can be setup and sized anywhere between 20 and 40 liters. This chart illustrates showcases
three examples of how much the Athlete Pack will expand up and out as the front is filled. The default size of the pack is about 20 liters. This is the smallest setup and how the pack arrives when you take it out of the box.

The Athlete Pack is carry-on sized and features a unique 40 liter shell that is only filled up to 40 liters when it's full of NON-CAMERA gear.

CUSTOM FIT HIKING-GRADE HIP BELT

LET'S CHOOSE YOUR BELT

The hip belt is the most important part of camera backpacking! Without the right size hip belt (one with padding that properly wraps around the front of your hip bones), you will not be able to properly load the weight of your heavy camera gear. Atlas Packs offers three different style hip belts in four sizes ranges. Pick the hip belt that works best for your needs. The hip belt is designed to transfer around 90% of your backpack’s weight from your shoulders to your hips.

All Atlas Packs hip belt's are interchangeable and can be used with all packs. And because the hip belt is removable, it's easy to make your pack smaller when you need; perfect for daily use and light loads.

  • The Adventure Hip Belt

*available at no cost with the purchase of a pack.

The Adventure Hip Belt is designed for heavier loads and includes a thick dual-layer of foam with a mesh outer span designed to grip and hold tight while providing for the utmost in comfort. This belt is best if you are super skinny without much in the way of layers OR if you have lots of love around your handles. The contour and shape of the belt means you can rest a lot of weight without having to squeeze super tight. If you're looking for a hip belt that can handle heavier loads, the Adventure Hip Belt is perfect for you. It features a thick dual-layer of foam with a mesh outer span designed to grip and hold tight, ensuring maximum comfort.

  • The Athlete Hip Belt

*available at no cost with the purchase of a pack.

The Athlete Hip Belt is designed for lighter loads and includes a thick single-layer of foam with a soft outer span that makes for a more streamlined and minimalist look with incredible fit and comfort. The Athlete style hip belt is recommended for packs with lighter loads (under 25lbs). The design of the webbing on the Athlete belt angles up as it goes around your mid section and works well with layers like jeans, shorts and a belt for all day comfort.

  • The Traveler's Hip Belt

*bundle and save with the purchase of a pack.

The Travel Hip Belt (also known as the Haenisch Hip Belt) has no padding, just a soft wrap with 38mm buckle and webbing. The Travel Hip Belt is available as an add on item and is not included with a pack. Available in gray (as shown) and black. Sizes S/M, M/L, XL with same
    measurements as Athlete belts.

ALL ABOUT HIP BELTS

HIP BELT FAQ

How much are the hip belts?

A hip belt of your choice is included with the purchase of your pack. Choose either the Adventure or Athlete style. The names of the belts are the same as the packs but all belts can be used with all packs.

**please note, the cost of the hip belt will be zero'd out in your cart.

Which hip belt is best for me?

The Adventure Belt is my personal favorite, as it offers both functionality and durability. It's designed to handle heavy loads without compromising comfort.

With that said, I get the most use out of my the Traveler's belt, I rarely take it off my pack. It's great for daily use, quick trips and of course travel.

How do I know which size to get?

See the size chart below. To measure, start with your pants size. This technique is the simplest and effective 90% of the time.

If the measurement (in inches or cm) of your pants fall between sizes, opt for the larger size belt!

Can I measure with a tape measure?

Yes. To measure with a tape measure you need to calculate the the span between your hips.

Place the tape measure on the front of one hip bone and work the tape around your back until you get to the other hip. For the final calculation add two fingers to each side for the total >> Measure up!

The width of the padding should cover the distance between your hips plus 1.5in/4cm on both sides.

What if I'm between sizes on hip belts?

Size up!!!

What about big and tall sizes?

We got ya and don't be shy if what we offer still not in your range. We
love help and will make a custom extender for you at no additional cost.

Can I use the pack without the hip belt?

Yes and it's one of my favorite features of the pack. Been able to easily remove the hip belt for use around town or to save space / bulk is exactly what they are also designed to do.

Can the hip belt without the pack?

Yes but ONLY WITH THE MAG BUCKLE >>

If you want to use your hip belt separately from your pack to carry camera gear around your hips, via the MOLLE webbing and third party attachments, a Magnetic Fidlock Buckle is MANDATORY.

The standard YKK buckle can be released via in-direct pressure and without the support of the pack, the hip belt would fall.

Available in black and gray and in two sizes, the large 38mm size fits all current hip belt styles (Athlete, Adventure and Travelers). The 25mm style fit an older style Athlete hip belt.

If you want to use the belt without the pack, the magnetic buckle is REQUIRED. Without the standard buckle the belt will release and fall to the ground (since it's not on the pack). Select the buckle size based on the width of your webbing (most best are 38mm).

How do I connect the hip belt to the pack?

This step is important. Hip belts are connected to the small pouches on the side of your pack. The 15mm webbing (the small skinny piece), needs to thread into the small buckle as shown in this image here. Be sure to pull tight and create a lot of tension.

How to install the hip belt on an Atlas Pack

Can I order more than 1 hip belt?

At this time you cannot purchase a second Athlete or Adventure style belt with your pack. Supply is limited, and the there is not enough of a difference between the two styles to justify the additional cost. My advice, get a Traveler's belt on the side, this will be a much better ROI.

**if you need a new Adventure or Athlete belt and are not purchasing a pack, please know stock and colorway is limited. Please contact Pro Support with any questions.
